Cool Florida Lizard

Check out this cool little lizard I saw at Ann Kolb Center park.  South Florida is full of these tiny guys.  But I never managed to get a decent photo of them until I go my new camera.

Look at this cute face.  The little guy just getting some sun on his log.  I am pretty sure he lives under that log.  He did not look afraid of me, so I took some pics and left him alone.

P.S.  Ok, i found out that the lizard is brown anole or Anolis sagrei.  So now we have a name to go the a face )))).  And turns out that they are invasive species from Cuba.  The criminals that Castro threw out of the country must have brought them over to Florida.

Does anyone know if keeping tapirs legal?  I would love to get a small Brazilian tapir.  They are just so cute.  They look like a mix between an elephant and a pig.

Brazilian Tapir Tapirus terrestri

Malayan Tapir Tapirus indicus :  these guys look like pandas.  I might have to fly to Malaysia and get one.

Weird Tree near Aventura Mall

I took my couch surfing friend shopping to the Aventura Mall.  I hate shopping and malls and general, but she wanted to get some american underwear.  She is from Germany and things are much cheaper here.  So I was dragged along.

Here we are, malling around

And here is the weird tree

Does anyone know what this is?  It almost looks like a mangrove tree.  But it's not, obviously.

More Muscovy Ducks

Took some more pictures of muscovy ducks Cairina moschata here in Hollywood, Florida.  These guys are everywhere.  They are invasive ducks from South  America.  I guess they have escaped from a duck farm or something like that.  They must have pretty good life outhere

Little Female Muskovy Duck

All these ducks are pretty fat.  I am not even sure if they can fly.  They like to pan handle for food from everyone.  I am kind surprised that locals don't eat them.  Seems like they should.  They are kind of cute, but I don't like invasive animals.  I am sure they do a ton of ecological damage

Portuguese Man of War washed on a beach!!!!

Look what washed up on the beach, I think it is Portuguese man of war (Physalia physalis). Looks dead, but it is still probably toxic.  To be on a safe side, I have decided against poking it with my fingers.

Does anyone have experience with this Portuguese jellyfish?  Do they sting hard?

Fun with Florida nature

My friend came over, so I had to take her on a tour of South Florida wildlife.  Also, I am hosting my very first couch surfer from Germany,  That's right, a real life German.  She is the one with the dreads.  Germans like MC Hammer pants for some reason ))))

Florida Mangrove Tree Crabs

Alright, got some more crab pictures. he he. ))) These time it's the infamous mangrove tree crabs!!!

These little guys were sitting not on trees, but on wooden poles. I had to be very careful not to spook them. They did not seem to want to go in the water, just moved around the wooden pole. Kind of neat. The scientific names for them is Aratus pisonii. They belong to Sesarmidae family of crabs. They occure anywhere from Southern Florida to Northern Brazil.

Their little home:  West Lake Park, Hollywood Florida

Flounder Metamorphosis

Found this cool video on youtube.  Flounders are such weird fish. To have both eye on one side is just so strange.  I also wonder if there is a flounder or a solefish out there that does not undergo this bizzar transformation by some freak accident and stays normal

Crab Report: part 2

That's my angry face.  He he. OK, i am not really angry, but somehow i photograph like that

Here is the video I put together.  I my hands were kind of shaky.  I think having a tripod would have helped.  Something to think about next time

Oh, and I have also filmed these 2 cool puffer at the Ann Kolb Center.  It looked like they wanted to be fed.  Anyway, puffers are great.  These guys are checkered puffer fish or Sphoeroides testudineus

The Crab Report

Finally got some good photos of local fiddler crabs (Uca pugnax).  They are very hard to photograph.  Every time I tried to take a picture, the bastards would run for their burrows.  I had to get a some what decent camera with a zoom to be able to photograph them (Nikon Coolpix L340 Digital).  For people who are wondering where this is, it is in Anne Kolb Center in Hollywood Florida.

I went to the park today to test out my camera (Nikon Coolpix L340 Digital). And there was a ton of these black little ducks. As soon as they saw me, the ran up to me in a huge swarm. Probably expecting to be fed. Well, I did not have food. The joke is on them !!!!

Oh, and the whit ibises ran up as well. They looked pretty neat with their super long beaks

Look at them running up to us for food. Silly birds.

Puffer fish washed on the beach.

This poor guy washed up on the beach.  I don't know what happened to him, but he was dead.  I felt really bad for him.  It's my first time seeing a porcupine puffer fisher outside an aquarium.  It would have been cool to see him alive.  Oh well.
